Special Olympians at Lake Oswego
Jun 13, 2015

An interesting coincidence occurred June 13 as Pete and I were playing the par 3 Lake Oswego Municipal course. About three or four groups behind us was a seven-some, followed by an eight-some. I saw a seven-some a few years back at the private Coquille Valley Elks course, but I'd never seen an eight-some.

Turns out these two groups included Special Olympics athletes and coaches. The coincidence I mentioned above? Chehalem Glenn hosts Special Olympians every July as part of Newberg's overall hosting of the Special Olympics Oregon Summer State Games. Volunteers from my church, Family Life Church, make up the "Water Brigade" during the Summer State Games, making sure the athletes stay hydrated. And while I help supervise several sites, Chehalem Glenn is one of my main venues.

The Special Olympians we encountered at Lake O may well have been attempting to qualify for the Summer State Games. Golf is a huge event at the Summer Games, and has grown enough over the years that not every Special Olympic athlete automatically gets to come, as was the case previously. So while I'm glad we weren't behind those two groups (a course staffer assured us they left a nice buffer for them), I do wish each of them the best of luck and hope to see them at Chehalem Glenn.
