A big day as three more courses come off the list!
Updated On: Jun 13, 2015
At Lake Oswego (above) and Frontier (below); we also hit the new Colwood Golf Center in between.

After a brief hiatus due to 1) Pete’s late March wedding, and 2) Pete’s annual every-weekend-in-May Newberg High School horticulture program plant sale, Don and Pete were back on the links in a big way June 13, knocking three (!) courses off their list and bringing The Quest “to do” total down to 41.

OK, they were all par 3 courses. First up was the 18 hole Lake Oswego Municipal course, then the “new” Colwood Golf Center, plus a stop at Frontier Golf Course in Canby on the way home. Colwood and Frontier each feature 9 holes, so it was a 36-hole day.

Each course offered its unique challenges. The greens at Lake Oswego are small — very small — and though well maintained, extremely hard. On most holes it’s virtually impossible to land a ball on the green and keep it there. But it’s a beautiful, park-like setting with hundreds of mature trees.

The Colwood Golf Center sits on part of the old Colwood National Golf Course property. Part of what was Colwood National is now industrial land, part is parkland and the rest is the new 9-hole, par layout. Each of the nine greens is huge with great undulations. Each dance floor also includes a white and blue flag, matching white and blue tees. You can play 36 “different” holes at the new Colwood by going blue-blue, white-white, blue-white and white-blue.

Frontier is a mom-and-pop operation being gently brought back to life by new owners from near foreclosure in 2012. While it won’t be mistaken for a lush layout anytime soon, it does feature some extremely tight fairways framed by mature trees that can serve as good shot-making practice. The greens are pretty bouncy and several include small dandelions, so there’s some work to do, but for 9 bucks for 9 holes and extremely friendly proprietors, you could do worse.
